Truphone is really giving the mobile operators the heebie geebies
Lost your SIM card? Is your mobile contract coming to an end? Have you thought about a cheaper alternative? Could Truphone offer a better deal?
Truphone allows you to use the wifi network to make mobile calls. And now they've enabled iPod touches to carry your calls.
We don't know how practically useful this will be (look out for our review) But it is promising
On Monday (Dec 15th) Truphone announced free applications for the iPod touch. Now you can use your iPod to annoy your fellow travellers in two ways. You can broadbcast your music. Or make loud, exhibtionist phone calls to any mobile or landline in the world, using Wi-Fi hotspots and the internet.
When in a Wi-Fi hotspot, Truphone enables an iPod touch to behave in the same way as a typical mobile phone. Wi-Fi hotspots are commonplace in offices, schools, campuses, at home, and even across entire town and city centres.
Truphone calls to landlines and mobiles cost from three peence (or six cents) per minute. The trafiff you might pay for calling from the 12:38 Surbiton - Waterloo train, to China or USA.
The service is available from more than 200 countries. Could cut the cost of calling all your friends and family over Xmas.
