The Laptop That Talks 3G
The Japs have created a laptop that can send data directly over the mobile phone network.
Lenovo and telco KDDI jointly developed the first domestic notebook computer that can transmit data using a cell phone network.
Equipped with a small communications module created by KDDI, the new Lenovo ThinkPad notebook sends data at a maximum speed of 2.4 gigabits per second. In Japan, that it is. You might as well send a carrier pigeon if you try this in England.
Notebook users will sign up with KDDI to access its cell phone network, with transmission fees to be charged separately.
The Japanese subsidiary of computer giant Lenovo has installed a highly functional antenna next to the ThinkPad's LCD panel, providing better reception than existing technology that requires a network card to be inserted into the computer.
Without the need for a specialized card, convenience is improved. And because the screen size is just 12.1 inches, it is easy to carry.
The computer, which hits shelves Wednesday, will be priced from 225,750 yen. This is some 37,000 yen more than conventional models.
Will it ever reach the UK?
